Actually it can work in either direction. Anxiety can cause high blood pressure, or having high blood pressure can cause anxiety. You should take your blood pressure (or have someone take it) when in a calm state. You should be seated with your upper arm at the same level as your heart. Place the cuff on your upper arm with the sensor on the inside of your arm between your bicep and tricep muscles. (if it is one of the automatic types) The sensor in the cuff will be slightly closer to your elbow. Take three readings about seven minutes apart. Then average the readings. That will give you a good idea what your normal blood pressure is. If you have been calm and not anxious and it is still high, then that may well be the cause. If it is normal (around 120/ 80) then your anxiety may be the cause of your sometimes high blood pressure. |
